\textit{R. A. Zalik} [J. Approximation Theory 58, 281-283 (1989; Zbl 0698.30038)] extended to higher order the inequality for first derivatives found long ago by S. Bernstein. The author presents a further extension and several related results. If P(x,y) is a polynomial of degree k greater than 1 and \(\alpha\geq 0\), then if \[ | f(z)| \leq (1+| z|^{\alpha})\exp (P(x,y)) \] there is a number C, a function of \(\alpha\) and P, such that \[ | f'(z)| \leq C(1+| z|^{\alpha +k-1})\exp (P(x,y)), \] and this has a converse. In addition, if \(| f(z)| \leq C \exp (c| z|^{\alpha})\) and \(| f(x)|\) is bounded by M for \(x\geq 0\), then \[ | f'(x)| \leq C_ 1\max (C,M)(1+x^{\alpha -1}), \] where \(C_ 1\) depends only on \(\alpha\) and c; this also is generalized.
