Let \((M,\alpha_ t)\) be a \(C^*\)-algebra with a one-parameter group of automorphisms \(\alpha_ t\), \(t\in {\mathbb{Z}}\) (or \(t\in {\mathbb{R}})\). For A, B subalgebras of M denote by \(A\vee B\) the \(C^*\)-algebra generated by them \((=\) normlimits of polynomials \(\sum a_ jb_ j...)\) and \(A\wedge B\) their set-theoretic intersection. \((M,\alpha_ t)\) is called a K- system if there exists some subalgebra \(A_ 0\) such that for \(A_ t=\alpha_ tA\), we have: 1) \(A_ t\subseteq A_ s\), \(\forall t<s;\) 2) \(\vee_ tA_ t=M;\) 3) \(\wedge_ tA_ t=z\mathbf{1}\), \(z\in {\mathbb{C}}.\) (This definition is given by Emch and Schröder apart from the fact that they deal with von Neumann algebras and add assumptions on the state.) In this paper noncommutative K-systems are considered from the point of view of topological dynamics where the structured framework is just a \(C^*\)-algebra with a one-parameter group. The connection of this concept with Jones' index theory is discussed.
