Over the past ten years much work has been done on 16-dimensional locally compact projective planes with large collineation groups. See, for example, \textit{H. Salzmann} [Can. J. Math. 39, 908-919 (1987; Zbl 0641.51006)] which is the fourth in a series of articles on such planes. Salzmann and \textit{M. Hubig} [`Sechzehndimensionale kompakte projektive Ebenen mit großer Automorphismengruppe', Diss., Tübingen (1990; Zbl 0708.51012)] proved that a 16-dimensional locally compact projective plane in which its group G of continuous collineations has dimension at least 40 is a translation plane. By work of the author [Monatsh. Math. 106, No.4, 265-299 (1988; Zbl 0691.51007)] such a plane is either the classical octonion plane or the group G has dimension 40 and contains the compact exceptional group \(G_ 2\) as a subgroup, but no larger compact simple subgroup. In the present article the author considers the second possibility and determines the translation planes explicitly. They are the planes coordinatized by the division algebras \({\mathbb{O}}_ t\), where t is real and \(t\neq 0\), 1/2, 1. The author actually proves a more general result, which is obtained by replacing the assumption ``dim G\(=40''\) with the assumption ``dim \(G\geq 38''\). The proof makes use of previous results of the author. [See Monatsh. Math. 97, 23-45 (1984; Zbl 0526.51013) and Arch. Math. 48, 267-276 (1987; Zbl 0639.51017).]
