This paper is devoted to the following question: which compacta X have the property that every map from X into the Euclidean n-space can be approximated by an embedding. The main results are the following theorems: 1. Let X be a compactum with \(n=2 \dim X\). Then the set \(E(X,R^ n)\) of all embeddings of X into \(R^ n\) is dense in the space \(C(X,R^ n)\) of all continuous maps from X into \(R^ n\), equipped with the ``sup-norm'' metric if and only if \(\dim (X\times X)<n\). The proof of the ``if''-part of this theorem does not use then hypothesis that \(n=2 \dim X.\) 2. Given compacta X and Y such that \(n=\dim X+\dim Y\), there exists a pair of maps \(f: X\to R^ n\) and \(g: Y\to R^ n\) with stable intersections if and only if \(\dim (X\times Y)=n\). Here a pair of maps \(f: X\to R^ n\) and \(g: Y\to R^ n\) is said to have a stable intersection if there is \(\epsilon >0\) such that for any other pair of maps \(f': X\to R^ n\) and \(g': Y\to R^ n\), satisfying the conditions \(\rho(f,f')<\epsilon\) and \(\rho(g,g')<\epsilon\), it follows that \(f'(X)\cap g'(Y)\neq \emptyset.\) The authors note that the above theorems follow from the works of \textit{J. Krasinkiewicz} [Fundam. Math. 133, No.3, 247-253 (1989; Zbl 0715.54027)] and \textit{S. Spież} [ibid. 134, No.2, 105-115 (1990; Zbl 0715.54028); and 135, No.2, 127-145 (1990; Zbl 0715.54029)].
