Let H(X) be the group of all homeomorphisms of a topological space X. By a result of \textit{J. de Groot} [Math. Ann. 138, 80-102 (1959; Zbl 0087.378)] every group is algebraically isomorphic to a group of the form H(X). Let H(X) be endowed with the compact-open topology. The author's main theorem is the following: For every totally disconnected separable metrizable topological group G there exists a separable metrizable space X such that G is topologically isomorphic to H(X). The very interesting proof is based on ideas in the author's papers [Math. Ann. 259, 321-329 (1982; Zbl 0468.57016), Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 101, 173-180 (1987; Zbl 0627.57016)]. \textit{J. Keesling} and \textit{R. Wilson} [Topology Appl. 22, 183-190 (1986; Zbl 0586.57019)] first constructed for every natural number \(n\geq 1\) a topological space \(X_ n\) such that \(H(X_ n)\) is n-dimensional. The same follows from the author's main theorem and his result on the existence of n-dimensional separable metrizable totally disconnected groups for every natural number \(n\geq 0\) [Math. Jap. 32, 267-273 (1987; Zbl 0622.22003)].
