This is a largely qualitative survey paper on the above topic which proceeds from \textit{R. A. Fisher}'s initial contributions [Ann. Eugen. 7, 184-192 (1915); The genetical theory of natural selection (Oxford 1930)] through the author's own contributions, under Fisher's initial stimulus, to the present time.
