    The author considers four classes of c-maximal subgroups (i.e., maximal subgroups of composite index) of finite group G: \({\mathcal A}(G)=\{M:\) M is c-maximal and [G:M]\(\neq \eta (G:M)\}\) where \(\eta\) (G:M) is the normal index of M; \({\mathcal A}_ 1(G)=\{M:\) M is c-maximal and \(\eta\) (G:M) is not a prime power\(\}\) ; \({\mathcal B}(G)=\{M:\) M is c-maximal, \(\eta (G:M)_ p\neq 1\), \([G:M]_ p=1]\) where \(n_ p\) denotes the p-part of n for prime p; and \({\mathcal C}(G)=\{M:\) M is c-maximal and \([G:M]_ p=1\) for given prime \(p\}\). The author proves: Theorem 1.1. \({\mathfrak S}(G)\), the intersection of the elements of \({\mathcal A}(G)\) (or G if \({\mathcal A}(G)=\emptyset)\), is the solvable radical of G. Theorem 1.3. \({\mathfrak S}_ 1(G)\), the intersection of the elements of \({\mathcal A}_ 1(G)\) (or G if \({\mathcal A}_ 1(G)=\emptyset)\), is the solvable radical of G. Theorem 1.4. \({\mathfrak S}(G,p)\), the intersection of the elements of \({\mathcal B}(G)\) (or G if \({\mathcal B}(G)=\emptyset)\), is p-solvable if \(p\geq q\), q any prime factor of \(| G|\). Theorem 1.5. \({\mathfrak S}_ p(G)\), the intersection of the elements of \({\mathcal C}(G)\) (or G if \({\mathcal C}(G)=\emptyset)\), is Sylow-towered of supersolvable type if p is the largest prime factor of \(| {\mathfrak S}_ p(G)|\) or \(| {\mathfrak S}_ p(G)|_ p=1\). The results are related to earlier work of Beidleman and Spencer, Mukherjee and Bhattacharya, the author, and the reviewer.
