One of the fundamental problems in Banach space theory is whether or not every (infinite dimensional) B-space contains \(c_ 0\), \(\ell^ 1\) or some infinite dimensional reflexive subspace. In this paper the authors approach the related problem of whether every B-space contains \(c_ 0\) or an infinite dimensional conjugate space by demonstrating a general technique for constructing boundedly complete basic sequences in certain types of B-spaces. In paticular it is proved that if a B-space X has the analytic Radon-Nikodym property then it contains a boundedly complete basic sequence (and hence a separable conjugate space).
