Due to a result of \textit{U-Hang Ki} [Tsukuba J. Math. 13, No.1, 73-81 (1989; Zbl 0678.53046)] there are no real hypersurfaces with parallel Ricci tensor in complex projective space \({\mathbb{C}}P^ m\) or in complex hyperbolic space \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\). A unit normal field C on a real hypersurface M of a complex space form (with Riemannian metric g and complex structure J) determines a vector field on M in a natural way, namely \(\xi =-JC\). The author introduces the notion of an \(\eta\)-parallel Ricci tensor S via the condition \(g((\nabla_ XS)Y,Z)=0\) for all vector fields X, Y, Z tangent to M and orthogonal to \(\xi\). The main result is the following classification of all real hypersurfaces M with \(\eta\)- parallel Ricci tensor in \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\) and \({\mathbb{C}}P^ m\) respectively, for which in addition \(\xi\) is a principal curvature vector of M at each point: M is locally congruent to (1) a geodesic hypersphere in \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\) and \({\mathbb{C}}P^ m\) respectively, or (2) a tube about a totally geodesic \({\mathbb{C}}H^ k\) in \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\) and \({\mathbb{C}}P^ k\) in \({\mathbb{C}}P^ m\) respectively \((0<k<m)\), or (3) a tube about a totally geodesic \({\mathbb{R}}H^ m\) in \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\) and \({\mathbb{R}}P^ m\) in \({\mathbb{C}}P^ m\) respectively, or (4) a horosphere in \({\mathbb{C}}H^ m\).
