Sharp inequalities are obtained both for the area and the first eigenvalue of a Riemannian 2-torus in terms of the three smallest lengths \(\ell_ 1\), \(\ell_ 2\), \(\ell_ 3\) of homotopically minimizing simple closed geodesics. In both cases equality characterizes flat tori.
