Let \(M=G/K\) be a compact Riemannian homogeneous space, with G compact. A homogeneous harmonic map \(\phi: M\to {\mathbb{C}}P^ n\) is a p-equivariant harmonic map, where p: \(G\to U(n+1)\) is a representation. The author makes a detailed (accurate and masterly) analysis of these maps. His starting point is the expression of \(\phi\) as a system of smooth sections of a complex line bundle. Taking \(M={\mathbb{C}}P^ m\), the author exhibits families of harmonic maps \(\phi: {\mathbb{C}}P^ m\to {\mathbb{C}}P^ n\) which are neither \(\pm\) holomorphic nor totally real. (Here \(m\ll n).\) [Reviewer's remarks: Such maps have recently been found by \textit{G. Tóth}, Mich. Math. J. 37, No.3, 385-396 (1990). Also, there are non- constant harmonic maps in case \(m=3=n\); whether there are such for \(m>n\) is unknown to me.]
