In this work the author studied the representation problem for constrained hyperelastic materials for a given material symmetry group g and a manifold M describing the set of local deformations allowed by an internal constraint. He derived the necessary and sufficient conditions under which this representation is reducible, i.e., deducible by restricting to M the solution of the corresponding constraint-free problem. In particular, he proved that, for each symmetry group g and each constraint manifold M, all continuous energies on M giving rise to stress distributions with symmetry g have a reducible representation. Moreover, he exhibited an (M,g) pair for which the corresponding representation theorem is not reducible. He concluded his study by showing that a condition discussed by \textit{H. Cohen} and \textit{C.-C. Wang} [e.g.: ibid. 85, 213-236 (1984; Zbl 0554.73034)] is sufficient, but not necesary, for reducibility. This work is very interesting and might be useful for those research workers involved in form invariant theories of continuum mechanics.
