The paper treats The Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture (FIC) of \textit{F. T. Farrell} and \textit{L. E. Jones} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 6, 249--297(1993; Zbl 0798.57018)] corresponding to the stable topological pseudoisotopy functor (a functor from the category of topological spaces to the category of spectra) for the fundamental groups of complex manifolds. To by-pass complicate notation, let us say that behind all of this is a whole construction of two spectra and a map between them. Then FIC states that this map is an equivalence of spectra. The author proves that FIC is true for the fundamental groups of a certain class of complex manifolds. Restricting to smooth complex algebraic varieties, the Leschetz hyperplane section theorem is applied to see that in order to prove FIC for the fundamental group of smooth projective algebraic varieties it is enough to consider the smooth projective algebraic surfaces. Under complex surface is understood a compact complex manifold of complex dimension 2, which may be algebraic or nonalgebraic (examples supplied). Complex surfaces are classified by Kodaira dimension. If \(X\) is a complex surface then the Kodaira dimension \(\kappa (X) \in \{-\infty,0,1,2\}\), i.e. \(\kappa (X)\) assumes only four values. This is used in the paper, and the following theorem concerning complex surfaces is proved. Let \(X\) be a complex surface of one of the following types: (1) \(X\) is algebraic and \(\kappa (X) = -\infty\); (2) \(X\) is a Hopf surface; (3) \(\kappa (X) = 0\); (4) \(X\) is an Inoue surface; (5) \(X\) is an elliptic surface. Then the Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture is true for \(\pi_1(X)\). Beside this, there are some other results related to fundamental groups of complex manifolds. There are also similar results for a class of of real manifolds including a large class of 3-manifolds.
