Let \(M\) be a connected 1-dimensional complex manifold (i.e., a~connected Riemann surface). Generalizing the corresponding notions for domains in~\(\mathbb C\), the authors consider the composition operators \(C_\rho: \omega\mapsto\rho^*\omega\), acting between the spaces \(\Lambda^1_2\) or \(\Lambda^1_{2,a}\) of square-integrable 1-forms and square-integrable holomorphic 1-forms, respectively, induced by a holomorphic map \(\rho:M\to N\) between two open connected Riemann surfaces; and the Toeplitz operators~\(T_\phi\), \(\phi\in L^\infty(M)\), acting on \(\Lambda^1_{2,a}(M)\). It is proved, among other things, that if \(M\) is simply connected, then \(C_\rho\) is Fredholm if and only if \(\rho\) is invertible; this remains in force also for \(M\subset\mathbb C\) finitely connected and with smooth boundary, but fails for general~\(M\). Furthermore, generalizing the result of the reviewer [\textit{M.\,Engliš}, Czech.\ Math.\ J.\ 40(115), No.\,3, 491--502 (1990; Zbl 0736.47018)], the set of all Toeplitz operators is shown to be dense in all bounded linear operators, with respect to the strong operator topology, and miscellaneous other results on Toeplitz operators are given.
