The authors continue the study of orthogonal matrix polynomials that satisfy second order differential equations as given in \textit{A. J. Durán} and \textit{F. A. Grünbaum} [J. Constr. Approx. 22, 255--271 (2005; Zbl 1097.42018)]. In that paper the structural formulae for the Hermite case were given and in the paper under review the authors study three one-parametric families of of weight matrices connected with the Laguerre- and Jacobi-weights: \[ t^{\alpha}e^{-t}\begin{pmatrix} 1+| a| ^2t^2 & at \cr \overline{a}t & 1\end{pmatrix},\;t^{\alpha}e^{-t}\begin{pmatrix} t^2+(t-1)^2| a| ^2 & a(t-1) \cr \overline{a}(t-1) & 1\end{pmatrix}, \] \(a\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\},t\in (0,\infty),\;\alpha>-1,\) \[ (1-t)^{\alpha}(1+t)^{\beta}\begin{pmatrix} (1+t)^2+t^2| a| ^2 & at \cr \overline{a}t & 1\end{pmatrix}, \] \(a\in\mathbb C\setminus\{0\},t\in (-1,1),\;\alpha,\beta >-1.\) For the orthogonal matrix polynomials with respect to these weight matrices the authors give -- the matrix Rodrigues formula, -- recurrence relations, -- relations with the corresponding scalar case, -- a representation in terms of matrix special functions of hypergeometric type. Moreover, for the second matrix Laguerre weight indicated above, the authors derive a second order differential equation that is linearly independent of the differential equation found before: a behaviour quite different from that in the scalar case.
