Akcoglu's classical dilation theorem asserts that any positive contraction on a usual (=commutative) \(L_p\)-space (\(1<p<\infty\)) can be dilated to an isometry [\textit{M.\,A.\thinspace Akcoglu} and \textit{L.\,Sucheston}, Can.\ Math.\ Bull.\ 20, 285--292 (1977; Zbl 0381.47004)]. This theorem has important applications to ergodic theory. The authors of the present paper show that there exists no reasonable noncommutative analog of this dilation. More precisely, let \(S_p\) denote the Schatten \(p\)-class with \(1<p<\infty\), \(p\neq2\). The authors construct a completely positive contraction on \(S_p\) that cannot be dilated to any isometry. The main ingredient of the construction is the non-symmetric version of Pisier's vector-valued noncommutative \(L_p\)-spaces [\textit{G.\,Pisier}, ``Non-commutative vector valued \(L_p\)-spaces and completely \(p\)-summing maps'' (Astérisque 247; Paris:\ Société Mathématique de France) (1998; Zbl 0937.46056)].
