An object \(C\) of an additive category is said to be compact if the functor \(\Hom(C,-)\) into the category of Abelian groups commutes with coproducts. In the category of right \(R\)-modules over some ring \(R\), finitely generated modules are compact. The author proves the converse holds if the ring is perfect. He also proves that the analogous result holds in the stable module category (where two morphisms are identified if their difference can be factored through a projective module). Among other applications he gives are those which concern equivalences of stable module categories.
