The author studies the size of Riemann surfaces into which a given noncompact Riemann surface of genus one can be conformally embedded. The size is described in terms of once-holed tori, that is, Riemann surfaces of genus one with one boundary component. In the main result the author proves that if \(R\) is a noncompact Riemann surface of genus one then there exists a unique once-holed torus \(T\) which satisfies the following conditions: (i) if \(R\) is simply embedded into a Riemann surface \(S \), then \(T\) is conformally embedded into \(S\). (ii) \(T\) is the largest among the once-holed tori satisfying condition (i). The author also deals with families of once-holed tori conformally embedded in Riemann surfaces of positive genus. Let \(R\) be such a Riemann surface and \(H\) a handle subgroup of the fundamental group of \(R\). Let \(S_R[H]\) denote the set of once-holed tori into which all subdomains of homotopy type \(H\) can be conformally embedded. Properties of \(S_R[H]\) are studied and estimates for the sizes of ideal boundaries of the tori in that set are given.
