The author proposes a new test for proving the positive definiteness of real banded Toeplitz matrices and shows that the analysis can be simplified. By using basic facts about the relation between spectral properties of Toeplitz matrices and the associated symbol, the author provides a direct \(d\)-level tool for deciding the stability of some numerical methods for ordinary differential equations.
