This paper deals with an example that was published in a paper by \textit{H. Huang, W. E} and \textit{M. Mu} [J. Comput. Math. 4, 362--367 (1986; Zbl 0596.65074)] where the authors claimed that for the Poisson equation on a rectangular domain \(\Omega\) the expansion \(u_h(x)=u(x)+ C(x)h^2+ o(h^2)\), \(x\in\Omega\) holds in \(L^2(\Omega)\). The purpose of this paper is to present a counterexample to the above claim.
