Let \(H\) be a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space and \(Gl(H)\) the general linear group of all invertible bounded operators on \(H\). Let \(Gl(H, B_1(H))\) be the subgroup of invertible trace class perturbations of the identity and the homogeneous space \(Gl(H, B_1(H))/{\mathcal U}_1\) , where \({\mathcal U}_1\) is the subgroup of \(Gl(H, B_1(H))\) of unitary operators. This space is identified to \(\Delta _1 = (1+a \in {\mathcal L}_1, 1+a>0),\) where \({\mathcal L}_1\) denotes the trace class perturbations of multiples of the identity. There exists a Finsler metric on the tangent bundle of \(\Delta _1\). The author shows that this Finsler metric induces a distance \(d\) on \(\Delta _1\) and determines several properties of the metric space \((\Delta _1 , d)\). He proves that the metric increasing property of the exponential map holds and that \(\Delta _1\) has non-positive curvature (in Busemann's sense) with respect to the Finsler metric.
