The author considers Volterra integral operators of the form \(Vf(x)= A(x)\int_0^x B(t)f(t)\, dt\) in the space \(L^2(0,1)\) and shows that if \(A\) and \(B\) are square integrable functions such that \(A(x)B(x)\) is real for a.e.\ \(x\in [0,1]\), then each number \(\lambda > 0\) is an extended eigenvalue for \(V\), that is, there is an operator \(Z\neq 0\) such that \(VZ=\lambda ZV\). One conclusion that is drawn form this result is that then the commutant of \(V\) is a proper subspace of the associated spectral radius algebra. A~number of other Volterra integral operators are discussed and some open problems are stated.
