The paper is concerned with the study of nonnegative self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space. The authors establish estimates for a perturbation of the square root of such operators. A study of the so called ``weak Sylvester operatorial equation'' is made in a very general case of unbounded operator coefficients. The weak Sylvester equation represents a generalization of the concept of the structured Sylvester equation from finite matrix setting to unbounded operator setting. With this paper the authors show that there are applications of the concept of the weak Sylvester equation outside the theory of Rayleigh-Ritz spectral approximations. They extend the theory to infinite dimensional invariant subspaces and derive estimates of the difference between the corresponding spectral projections in all unitary invariant norms. A new way to regularize the weak Sylvester equation has to be found.
