The definition of Gorenstein injective modules is extended to arbitrary commutative noetherian local rings. Prior results by \textit{E. E. Enochs, O. M. G. Jenda} and \textit{J. Xu} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 348, No.~8, 3223--3234 (1996; Zbl 0862.13004)] and \textit{L.W. Christensen, A. Frankild} and \textit{H. Holm} [J. Algebra 302, No. 1, 231--279 (2006; Zbl 1104.13008)] rely on the assumption that the ring \(R\) has a dualizing complex, which allows to define the so-called Auslander category of \(R\). The authors treat the general case by passing to the completion \(\widehat{R}\) of \(R\) and defining a substitute for the Auslander category. More precisely, these all the \(R\)-modules that are moved by the functor \(\text{Hom}_R(\widehat{R}, -)\) into the Auslander category of~\(\widehat{R}\).
