A compact \(T_0\)-space is called `spectral' provided its open compact subsets form a basis of the topology closed under taking finite intersections and every irreducible closed subset of it has a generic point. The following two topological spaces are associated to every associative ring \(R\) with identity: (i) the space \(\text{Spec\,}R\) of all prime ideals of \(R\) with the Stone topology; (ii) the space \(\text{XSpec\,}R\) of all locally prime ideals called the `extended prime spectrum' of \(R\). The space \(\text{XSpec\,}R\) was introduced by \textit{L. P. Belluce} [in Commun. Algebra 25, No. 5, 1513-1536 (1997; Zbl 0884.16027)]. \textit{I. Kaplansky} indicated a class of rings for which spaces of prime ideals are spectral [Topics in commutative ring theory, Dept. Math., Univ. Chicago (1974; Zbl 0348.13001)]. In the paper is studied the relationship between the following conditions on a ring \(R\): (1) \(\text{Spec\,}R\) is spectral; (2) \(\text{Spec\,}R=\text{XSpec\,}R\). Since by construction \(\text{XSpec\,}R\) is a spectral space, (2)\(\Rightarrow\)(1). The authors construct an example of a ring \(R\) for which \(\text{Spec\,}R\neq\text{XSpec\,}R\) and \(\text{Spec\,}R\) is spectral, i.e., (1) does not imply (2). It is also constructed an example of a von Neumann regular ring \(R\) whose space \(\text{Spec\,}R\) is not spectral.
