Let \(q\) be a nonzero element of a field \(k\) which is not a root of 1. The coordinate \(k\)-algebra of quantum \(n\times m\)-matrices is the associative \(k\) algebra \(\mathcal O_q(M_{m,n})\) with a unit element generated by indeterminates \(Y_{i,\alpha}\), \(1\leqslant i\leqslant m\), \(1\leqslant\alpha\leqslant n\), subject to defining relations of the following form \(Y_{j,\beta}Y_{i,\alpha}\) is equal to \(q^{-1}Y_{i,\alpha}Y_{i,\beta}\) if \(i=j\), \(\alpha<\beta\), to \(Y_{i,\alpha}Y_{j,\alpha}\), if \(i<j\), \(\alpha=\beta\), to \(Y_{i,\alpha}Y_{j,\beta}\) if \(i<j\), \(\alpha>\beta\), and to \(Y_{i,\alpha}Y_{j,\beta}-(q-q^{-1})Y_{i,\beta}Y_{j,\alpha}\) if \(i<j\), \(\alpha<\beta\). The first result of the paper is a criterion for primitivity of \(\mathcal O_q(M_{n,m})\). Suppose that \(m<n\) and \((m,n)\neq(1,3)\). Then each automorphism \(\sigma\) of \(\mathcal O_q(M_{n,m})\) is mapping each generator \(Y_{i,\alpha}\) to \(\mu_{i,\alpha}Y_{i,\alpha}\) for some \(\mu_{i,\alpha}\in k^*\).
