The author has answered a question posed by J. Chmieliński, which asks whether a linear map that approximately preserves orthogonality must be close to an orthogonality preserving one. They also provide a proof of the stability of the orthogonality equation on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Note: Chmieliński's question deserves sufficient interest to be studied for more general mappings (than linear1) and for a wider class of spaces (than Hilbert spaces). It is the reviewer's conjecture that this must be possible.
