Let k be a quadratically closed field of characteristic \(\neq 2\), and let \(\Omega =K\cup \{\infty \}\). It is easily verified that the group \(PSL(2,K)=PGL(2,K)\) acting faithfully on \(\Omega\) has the following two properties: (i) Each nonidentity element has at least one and at most two fixed points; (ii) Given any two distinct points of \(\Omega\) there is an involution which fixes both of these two points. It is the object of this paper to prove the converse, namely: Let G be a permutation group on a set \(\Omega\) with a least three elements. If G satisfies the conditions (i) and (ii) (listed above) then G is isomorphic, as a permutation group to PSL(2,K), where K is a quadratically closed field of characteristic \(\neq 2\).
