The paper under review generalizes part of the theory of blocks with cyclic defect groups to blocks with abelian defect groups. So let G be a finite group, R a suitable complete discrete valuation ring, B a p-block of RG with abelian defect group P and inertial factor group \(E\subseteq N_ G(P)/C_ G(P)\subseteq\Aut(P)\), and let L be the semidirect product of P and E. The author shows that, if E is cyclic and acts freely on \(P\setminus \{1\}\), then B and RL are stably equivalent. Thus there exists an isometry between their groups of generalized characters vanishing on \(p'\)-elements. If E is arbitrary but still acts freely on \(P\setminus \{1\}\) then B and \(R_*L\) are stably equivalent where \(R_*L\) denotes the usual twisted group algebra of L over R. If E does not act freely on \(P\setminus \{1\}\) then the module categories of B and \(R_*L\) are at least equivalent modulo Q-projectives where Q ranges over subgroups of P such that \(C_ L(P)\neq P\) and their conjugates. These results about module categories are derived from a more precise result relating the (interior) algebra structures of B and \(R_*L\). Major tools used in the proof are the relative covering exomorphisms introduced in an earlier paper [Invent. Math. 93, 77-116 (1988; Zbl 0646.20010)] and a construction method for endo-permutation modules with prescribed slashed modules (in the language of \textit{E. C. Dade} [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 107, 459-494 (1978; Zbl 0395.16007)]). Unfortunately, the results are not strong enough to give sufficient information concerning numbers of irreducible characters, Cartan invariants or decomposition numbers (except in cases where \(| E|\) is very small).
