Automorphic representations that contribute to the poles of the Hasse- Weil zeta function of a Hilbert-Blumenthal surface are called distinguished representations [see \textit{G. Harder}, \textit{R. P. Langlands}, \textit{M. Rapoport}, J. Reine Angew. Math. 366, 53-120 (1986; Zbl 0575.14004)]. The author investigates the local components of distinguished representations which are again called distinguished. Let \(E| F\) denote a quadratic extension of p-adic fields, let \(G=GL_ 2\), H an inner F-form of G which splits over E. There are two possibilities of H, one is anisotropic modulo the center, the other splits. A representation \(\pi\) of G(E) is called H-distinguished if it admits an H(F)-fixed covector. By the use of Kirillov models in the split case the author proves that the space of H(F)-fixed covectors is at most one-dimensional. The author gives a criterion for H(F)-distinguishedness in terms of gamma factors in the split case. He further shows that if \(\pi\) is supercuspidal then the two cases are equivalent. For induced representations he gives a list of distinguished representations.
