Let F be a function space and G a subspace of ``good'' functions of F. In this survey paper, the author presents some recent results and open problems on free interpolation on thick sets (in metric sense or in cardinality) of functions in F by function in G, for various F and G. The first part ``Interpolation by smooth functions'' is concerned with the problem of improving the smoothness of a function in C[0,1] by free interpolation on perfect subsets of [0,1]. The second part ``Interpolation in Fourier analysis'' is dealing with the interpolation of a function, continuous on the unit circle \(T=R/2\pi\), by elements in the space U(T) of the functions having uniformly convergent Fourier series or in the Wiener algebra A(T) of continuous functions having absolutely convergent Fourier series.
