Let \(p_ n(x)\) be the best approximation polynomial of degree n to the continuous function f(x) for \(x\in [-1,1]\). G. Lorentz conjectured that if \(p_{2n}(x)=p_{2n+1}(x)\) for all n, then f is even. It is proved under the \(L_ 1\)-norm, that the Lorentz conjecture is valid conditionally, and these conditions are the following: \((1-x^ 2)f(x)\) can be extended to an absolutely convergent Chebyshev series and for every n the error function \(f(x)-p_{2n+1}(x)\) has exactly \(2n+2\) zeros. An analogous result is given if f is odd.
