This paper examines the properties of homentropic Euler equations with spatially averaged characteristics. The new equations are referred to as the characteristically averaged homentropic Euler (CAHE) equations. The authors give an existence and uniqueness proof for the modified equations. The shock speed for the CAHE equations is determined, the Riemann problem is examined, and a general form of the solution is presented. Finally, the authors perform numerically simulations of the homentropic Euler and CAHE equations, and compare the behavior of the solutions of two equations.
