Let \((R,m,k)\) be a local noetherian ring and \(M,N\) two finitely generated \(R\)-modules. The complexity \(cx_R(M,N)\) of the pair \((M,N)\) measures the polynomial growth rate of the minimal number of generators of \(\mathrm{Ext}_R^n(M,N)\), \(n\in \mathbb{N}\). The main aim of this paper is to study when \(cx_R(M,N)\leq \min\{cx_R(M,k),cx_R(k,N)\}\) for all \(M,N\). This is true when \(R\) is a complete intersection by \textit{L. L. Avramov, R.-O. Buchweitz} [Invent. Math. 142, No.2, 285--318 (2000; Zbl 0999.13008)] and when \(R\) is a Cohen-Macaulay with isolated singularity as it is proved here.
