The author generalizes some theorems of \textit{N. Vilenkin} [Mat. Sb., N. Ser. 19(61), 85--154 (1946; Zbl 0061.04302)] and introduces the notion of a basic subgroup for linearly discrete topological abelian groups playing an analogous role as a basic subgroup for discrete abelian groups. A topological abelian group \(G\) is called linearly discrete if the following holds: (1) There exists a complete system of neighborhoods of zero in it consisting of subgroups. (2) \(G\) is a free union of compact subgroups. (3) In each compact subgroup of \(G\) increasing chains of subgroups terminate. In the first section of the paper the author gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the expansion of linearly discrete topological groups to be a direct sum of rank-one subgroups. In the second section he proves that each linearly discrete topological abelian group has a basic subgroup. In the third section he shows: Let \(G\) be a connected locally compact abelian group. Then each indiscrete subgroup of \(G\) is dense in \(G\) if and only if \(G\) is the additive group of all real numbers. In Section 4 it is shown that no free modul over the ring \(\mathbb{Z}_p\) admits a weakly linearly compact topologization except it is a linearly discrete one. Furthermore the author studies there how the properties of the character group of a weakly linearly compact abelian group \(G\) influence properties of \(G\). In Sections 5 and 6 the author characterizes linearly discrete topological abelian groups in the \(p\)-adic topology using direct expansions. In particular he proves that a topological abelian group \(G\) is linearly discrete and linearly compact if it expands into a direct sum of a finite number of rank-one groups. In Section 7 the author obtains results of \textit{L. Fuchs} [J. Aust. Math. Soc. 9, 433--440 (1969; Zbl 0186.32902)] using basic properties of linearly discrete topological abelian groups. In the last section large subgroups of linearly discrete topological abelian groups and their properties are studied.
