The bilinear Hilbert transform is defined by \[ B(f,g)(x)= PV\int^\infty_{-\infty} {f(x- t)g(x+ t)\over t}\,dt, \] where \(f\), \(g\) are functions defined on \(\mathbb{R}\). The author applies this transform to pairs of Hermite functions and to pairs of Laguerre functions. The Hermite functions are defines as \(\varphi_n(x)= H_n(x) e^{-x^2/2}\), where \(H_n\) are the Hermite polynomials. The Laguerre functions are the functions \(\psi_n(x)= L_n(x) e^{-x/2}\), \(L_n\) being the Laguerre polynomials. It is shown that \(B(\varphi_n, \varphi_m)(x)= \sqrt{\pi} P_{n,m}(x) e^{-x^2}\), where \(P_{n,m}\) is a polynomial of degree \(n+m-1\) with integer coefficients and \(P_{n,n}= 0\). Also \[ B(\psi_n, \psi_m)(x)= \begin{cases} Q_{n,m}(x) e^{-x}\quad &\text{if }x> 0,\\ 0\quad &\text{if }x< 0,\end{cases} \] and \(Q_{n,m}\) is a polynomial of degree \(n+ m\) \(n\neq m)\) with \(Q_{n,n}= 0\). In the paper further properties of these polynomial are listed together with other interesting details. The author also discusses a generalized version \(B_\alpha(f, g)\) of the bilinear Hilbert transform.
