    Groundbreaking work on the Grothendieck type inequality for operator spaces of \textit{G. Pisier} and \textit{D. Shlyakhtenko} [Invent. Math. 150, No.~1, 185--217 (2002; Zbl 1033.46044)] and of \textit{U. Haagerup} and \textit{M. Muşat} [Invent. Math. 174, No. 1, 139--163 (2008; Zbl 1188.46034)] shows, in particular, that the class of separable operator spaces \(F\) with both \(F\) and \(F^*\) embeddable into a noncommutative \(L_1\)-space, is included (up to complete isomorphism) into the class \(QS(C\oplus R)\) of quotients of subspaces of the direct sum of the column space \(C\) and the row space \(R\). The converse was independently established by the authors [\textit{M. Junge}, IMRP, Int. Math. Res. Pap. 2006, No.~17, Article ID 76978 (2006; Zbl 1218.46039); \textit{Q.-H. Xu}, Math. Ann. 335, No.~1, 109--131 (2006; Zbl 1121.46049)]. The paper under review is devoted to a thorough study of the subclass \(HQS(C\oplus R)\) of homogeneous subspaces \(F\), where all bounded linear maps on \(F\) are completely bounded. The main results can be grouped in three categories, as follows: {\parindent6.5mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)] A representation result, showing in particular that every infinite-dimensional space \(F\in HQS (C \oplus R)\) is completely isomorphic to \(C\), \(R\), \(C \cap R\), or to a certain Hilbertian space \(K_{u_c,u_r}\), and that in each case \(C \cap R \subset F \subset C+R\) completely isomorphically. \item[(2)] Explicit asymptotic formulas for the exactness constant \(\text{ex} (F_n)\) and the injectivity constant \(\lambda_{\text{cb}} (F_n)\) of \(n\)-dimensional subspaces \(F_n\) of \(F\in HQS (C\oplus R)\). Although obtained under a certain regularity condition concerning the size of two ratios involving the canonical norms \(\Phi_c (n)=\big\| \sum_{1}^n e_{k1} \otimes e_k \big\|^2_{C\otimes_{\text{min}} F}\) and \(\Phi_r (n) =\big\| \sum_1^n e_{1k} \otimes e_k \big\|^2_{R\otimes_{\text{min}} F}\) with \((e_k)\) an orthonormal basis in \(F\), they turn out to be good enough to cover the important situation of \(C_p\), the column subspace of the Schatten \(p\)-class, providing \(\text{ex} (C_p^n) \sim n^{1/(pp^\prime)}\), \(\lambda_{\text{cb}} (C_p^n) \sim n^{1/\max (p,p^\prime)}\) if \(p\neq 2\), and \(\lambda_{\text{cb}} (C_2^n) \sim \sqrt{n/\log (n+1)}\). \item[(3)] Realizing the Effros-Ruan space \(\Pi_1^o (E,F)\) of all \(1\)-summing maps for regular \(E,F\in HQS (C\oplus R)\) as a Schatten-Orlicz class \(S_\varphi\), with an explicit asymptotic formula for the fundamental sequence of the Orlicz function \(\varphi\). In fact, Orlicz space ideas and techniques, pioneered into the field of operator spaces in this paper, play an important role in formulating the regularity condition and in the proof of the main results. \end{itemize}}
