The paper under review represents William Kingdom Clifford (1845-1879) as a mathematician and a philosopher. Among the most original and far-reaching of the contributions made by Clifford to mathematics are noted biquaternions, Clifford parallelism (1873), and Clifford algebras (1878). As a philosopher Clifford reflected on the nature of space and non-euclidean geometries (1873), placed high emphasis on ``the mind-body problem'' and the nature of things in themselves (1876). In the ``Ethics of religion'' (1877) he insisted on the scientific basis of morals. It is notable that Clifford's philosophy was closely connected to the main aspects of his mathematics.
