The authors [Commun. Math. Phys. 283, No. 3, 647--662 (2008; Zbl 1159.35016)] introduced the following notion for a sequence \((\omega_n)\) in a metric space \(\Omega\): it has the repetition property RP if and only if for every \(r\in\mathbb N\) there exists \(q\in\mathbb N\) with \(d(\omega_n,\omega_{n+q})<1/r\) for every \(n=0,1,2,\dots,rq\), and a map \(T:\Omega\to\Omega\) has the topological repetition property TRP if the set of points whose forward orbit has RP is non-empty, a metric analogue MRP with respect to some \(T\)-invariant measure if the set has positive measure, and has GRP (global) if the orbit of every point has RP. Here some general properties of these notions are explored, and the particular case of sequences on the torus generated by a polynomial or skew-shifts is considered in detail. These provide classes of ergodic Schrödinger operators with potentials generated by skew-shifts on the torus that have no eigenvalues.
