A group is Tikhonov if for any action on a convex cone with compact base in a locally convex topological vector space there exists an invariant ray. Examples of Tikhonov groups are all finite groups, abelian groups, nilpotent groups and their direct unions and direct products. Also, it is well-known that every Tikhonov group is amenable. The authors survey the Tikhonov property for discrete groups. They discuss the general results and relations with amenability, with discrete potential theory (random walks), and with the theory of weights. Then the authors present a characterization of the Tikhonov property for virtually abelian groups, for polycyclic groups and for linear groups. They also consider cases of metabelian groups and give several examples.
