The authors present a derivation of a Cahn-Hilliard equation variant in which nonlocal interactions are accounted for. Nonlocal boundary conditions are considered with a boundary penalization term. The nonlocal CHE originates in [\textit{G. Giacomin} and \textit{J. L. Lebowitz}, ``Exact macroscopic description of phase segregationin model alloys with long range interactions'', Phys. Rev. Lett. 76, No. 7, 1094--1097 (1996; \url{doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.76.1094})] and the present work provides a significant update. Indeed, here the two chemical potentials (defined in the bulk and on the boundary surface) are related through a Robin boundary condition where each potential contains weak nonlocal diffusion in the bulk and on the boundary surface, respectively. The authors prove weak and strong well-posedness of the variant and examine some singular limits associated with the setup.
