The author studies the propagation properties of general reaction-diffusion equation with periodic coefficient and periodic domain. The results also answer the open problem by \textit{H. Berestycki} et al. [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 7, No. 2, 173--213 (2005; Zbl 1142.35464)]. It provides us that the critical speed of pulsating traveling front and the invasion speed are not everywhere equal. The author extends the classical Freidlin-Gärtner formula to periodic equations and derives some bounds on the speed of invasion using estimates on the heat kernel, and investgates the critical speed of fronts.
