The author of this article considers a scattering problem that is motivated by applications of open wave guides such as optical fibers. Precisely, he examines both theoretically and practically the inverse scattering problem in order to reconstruct a defect within an infinite medium with periodicity in the upper half space from the knowledge of near-field data. The method at hand is the factorization by Kirsch which is shown to work for all wave numbers. Further, the factorization method is combined with the monotonicity method in order to obtain an algorithm that is able reconstruct the unknown defect. Numerical results are given which complement the theoretical findings and which illustrate the new algorithm.
