    Consider the singularly perturbed boundary value problem \[ \begin{gathered} \mu^2 u''= f(u,x,\mu)\qquad\text{for }0\leq x\leq 1,\\ u(0,\mu)= u^0,\;u(1,\mu)= u^1\end{gathered}\tag{\(*\)} \] under the essential condition that \(f\) has a discontinuity at \(x= x_0\in(0, 1)\), that is, \[ f(u,x,\mu)= \begin{cases} f_1(u,x,\mu)\quad &\text{for }0\leq x\leq x_0,\\ f_2(u,x,\mu)\quad &\text{for }x_0\leq x\leq 1,\end{cases} \] where the functions \(f_1\) and \(f_2\) are sufficiently smooth. The authors present conditions under which \((*)\) for sufficiently small \(\mu\) has a solution \(u(x,\mu)\), \(u(\cdot,\mu)\in C^1[0,1]\cap C^2(0,x_0)\cap C^2(x_0,1)\), with an interval layer at \(x=x_0\). Further, they construct an asymptotic expansion in \(\mu\).
