Given a complex separable infinite dimensional Banach space \(X\), a bounded operator \(T\) on \(X\) is said to be \emph{chaotic} (in the sense of Devaney) if it is hypercyclic (i.e. admits a vector with dense orbit) and has a dense set of periodic points. The paper under review provides a complete characterization of the possible sets of periods of all periodic points of a chaotic operator on a Banach space: these are exactly the infinite subsets \(A\) of \(\mathbb{N}\) such that for any pair \((m,n)\) of elements of \(A\), the lowest common multiple of \(m\) and \(n\) also belongs to \(A\). When this condition on \(A\) is satisfied, there exists a chaotic operator \(T\) on the Hilbert space \(\ell_{2}\) such that the set of periods of all periodic points of \(T\) is exactly \(A\). The operators constructed in the proof are Kalish-type operators, similar to those which were used in [\textit{F. Bayart} and \textit{S. Grivaux}, J. Funct. Anal. 226, No. 2, 281--300 (2005; Zbl 1089.47008)] in the context of linear dynamics.
