The classical Kawada-Itô theorem asserts that the sequence $\left\{\frac{1}{n} \sum_{k=1}^n \mu^k\right\}_{n=1}^\infty$ of probability measures will weakly$^*$ tend to the Haar measure of a compact separable group $G$, provided that $\mu$ is such a probability measure on $G$ that it generates $G$. In this paper, the authors extend the above mean ergodic theorem to a more general setting in several aspects. The most interesting case is that $G$ is now a locally compact abelian group, while $\mu$ is now any power bounded measure. Moreover, the arithmetic mean is generalized to the following Silverman-Toeplitz means $$ \mathrm{w}^*-\lim_{n\to\infty}\sum_{k=0}^\infty a_{n,k} \mu^k= \mu_*, $$ provided that $A=[a_{n,k}]_{n,k=0}^\infty$ is a strongly regular matrix. Furthermore, the limit $\mu_*$ has also been characterized using the hull of $\mu$ (see Theorem 2.1). The paper is well written and contains a systematic deduction of these extensions. It also includes some interesting applications to the group actions on $\sigma$-compact locally compact groups.
