A categorical approach to operator semigroups (Q2663126)

The structure of strongly continuous operator semigroups is put into a categorical framework. In particular, the inverse-producing Arens extension for Banach algebras [\textit{R.\,Arens}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 88, 536--548 (1958; Zbl 0082.11105)] adapted for operators and operator semigroups by \textit{C. J. K. Batty} and \textit{F. Geyer} [J. Oper. Theory 78, No. 2, 473--500 (2017; Zbl 1449.47023)] is studied in this new framework. The author demonstrates that the Arens extension defines an extension functor in this setting and that it forms an adjunction with a suitably defined forgetful functor. As a by-product of this categorical framework, the author revisits the work on Banach direct sums by \textit{M. Lachowicz} and \textit{M. Moszyński} [Semigroup Forum 93, No. 1, 34--70 (2016; Zbl 1372.47056)].
