This paper is devoted to the question whether a projective transformation is necessarily a diffeomorphism. In 1965 this question was answered affirmatively by \textit{F. Brickell} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 16, 567--574 (1965; Zbl 0134.18103)] for dimension three and higher. The present paper deals with the remaining dimension two. In particular, it is proved that in dimension two, every locally injective projective transformation of oriented \(C^k\)-smooth path geometries is a local \(C^k\)-diffeomorphism. In the proof the author uses the classical Whitehead theorem on convex and simple neighborhoods and Lebesgue differentiation theorem for monotone functions.
