A certain algebraic structure reminiscent of that of a Hopf algebroid \(H\) over a noncommutative base \(A\) was constructed by \textit{T. Jurić} et al. [Phys. Lett., A 377, No. 38, 2472--2476 (2013; Zbl 1311.81155); Int. J. Mod. Phys. A 29, No. 5, Article ID 1450022, 32 p. (2014; Zbl 1284.81175)]. Their examples come along with a subalgebra \(\mathcal B\) of \(H\otimes H\) which contains the image of the coproduct and whose intersection with the kernel of the projection \(H\otimes H\to H\otimes_A H\) is a two-sided ideal in \(\mathcal B\) well behaved with respect to the antipode. In this paper, the authors propose a set of axioms covering Meljanac's construction. In their new axiomatization, the subalgebra \(B\otimes H\otimes H\) is called the balancing subalgebra and the new version of a Hopf algebroid over noncommutative base algebra \(A\) is named a Hopf \(A\)-algebroid with balancing subalgebra \(\mathcal B\). A detailed comparison with the Hopf algebroids of \textit{J.-H. Lu} [Int. J. Math. 7, No. 1, 47--70 (1996; Zbl 0884.17010)] is given. It is shown that every scalar extension Hopf algebroid can be cast into a Hopf algebroid with a suitable choice of balancing subalgebra \(\mathcal B\). An observation of G. Böhm, saying that each weak Hopf algebra gives rise to a Hopf algebroid, is presented in their framework. The effect on the balancing subalgebra under Drinfeld-Xu procedure of twisting of associative bialgebroids is also discussed.
