The semi-discrete bicompact scheme was designed for the quasilinear two-dimensional diffusion equation. The scheme is fourth-order accurate and can be easily generalized to the three-dimensional case. In addition, any fully discrete bicompact scheme derived from it is conservative. Several types of Runge-Kutta methods for time discretization were discussed. Since fully explicit time integration leads to absolutely unstable bicompact schemes, IMEX time integration was selected as a good compromise between required stability and computational efficiency. The original diffusion flux was divided into the sum of the linear flux (with the constant diffusion coefficient) and the nonlinear remainder flux; the latter flux was treated explicitly, while the former one implicitly. The IAF method was proposed for implementation of the baseline bicompact scheme with backward-forward Euler time discretization. It was shown, that the small modification of this method yields the implementation algorithm for bicompact schemes with DIRK time stepping. Next, numerical results for three fully discrete bicompact schemes were presented. These schemes utilize second- and third-order IMEX Runge-Kutta, third-order DIRK time discretizations. The high-order grid convergence was demonstrated in cases of one mildly varying and one wide-range oscillating diffusion coefficients. The IAF method of IMEX bicompact schemes was shown to be fast-converging, while DIRK time stepping and the corresponding modified IAF method were found to be overall more efficient by accuracy-cost, especially in the case of the steeply varying diffusion coefficient.
